Beautiful Beaches in Aarhus and the Moesgård Viking Moot You Can’t Miss!

Aarhus, Denmark has some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen! The water turns ten different shades of turquoise, and it stays pretty cool so it’s nice and refreshing on a hot day. People are out sunbathing at the beach and sailing all summer! I got to visit a couple of beaches in Aarhus when I was studying there, and I also got to visit the Moesgård Viking Moot at the Moesgård beach and see some Viking warriors in action!

So the whole reason I spent a month in Aarhus was to study the Viking Age at the university there, and my class took a trip to the Moesgård Viking Moot outside town. The Moesgård Viking Moot is an annual Viking reeactment and market on the Moesgård beach. There’s also a history museum there, but I didn’t get the chance to go that time.

The Moesgård Viking Moot is open for a week every summer, and we actually got a preview of it a few days before it opened, so we got to see them practicing their fighting and got some lectures from some of the people running stands to learn about their craft. If you get the chance to visit, I highly recommend asking the people there about their wares! I learned a ton about how they create authentic Viking weapons today and how Vikings dyed cloth. I also recommend doing some shopping, and I got some carved wooden spoons for my kitchen and a beautiful handmade scarf 🙂

While we were at the market, we got to see some practice battles! They have rules so no one gets seriously hurt, but they use authentic Viking weapons and shields. You may know by now that I’m obsessed with Viking history, so it was really cool to see the battle formations that I have learned about in action (I didn’t get to see a true shield wall though because that is probably a little too violent for people not really fighting).

Beaches in Aarhus

The Moesgård Viking Moot is right on the beach, so after getting my fill of the market, I spent the afternoon on the Moesgård Beach. The water was absolutely beautiful, but it was pretty cold! I was in Aarhus during a particularly hot summer, so the cold water was pretty refreshing.

The Moesgård Beach is about 20 minutes outside of downtown Aarhus, and you can take a bus right to the beach! Because a little outside the city, it was emptier than other beaches I went to. There were quite a few people there, but it wasn’t overly crowded and the beach was fairly big.

Another one of the beaches in Aarhus that I enjoyed going to was Den Permanente. It’s a little north of downtown Aarhus but closer to the city. You can take buses there or walk pretty easily. It’s smaller and a little more crowded than Moesgård, but it’s still beautiful! There are also toilets and places to change, and outside the little docks, there’s some more of the beach that wasn’t as crowded.

I was in Aarhus for the Sailing World Championship, so I got to see a lot of sailboats while I was there!

The beaches in Aarhus were so beautiful, and I definitely recommend visiting one on your trip! And if you go in the summer, you can’t miss visiting the Moesgård Viking Moot to experience some Viking reenactments 🙂
