Beautiful Burano Island: A Must See in Italy

You can view all posts from my trip to Italy here.

You’ve probably seen photos of Burano Island with gorgeous, brightly painted buildings on canals all over Instagram and thought the photos were too good to be true. But I am here to say that Burano Island is just as beautiful as all the photos! 🙂 Sadly, it rained the entire time we were there so we didn’t get to see these stunning buildings against a blue sky, but the buildings were just as pretty in the rain (but sorry about the grey skies in these photos). And the rain probably helped keep tourists away because we were basically the only people on the island, so it was nice to be able to explore an empty island.

If you’ve read my Venice posts, you’ll know that Venice didn’t win me over, but I LOVED Murano and Burano, even in the rain, and I highly recommend visiting them if you get the chance!

Why you must visit Burano Island

If you read my post on Murano Island, I went over how to get to the islands by a water taxi. It took about 45 minutes to get out to Burano Island, and make sure you study the schedule and the water taxi map because on our way back, we got on one going the wrong way and had to go to the end of the line! We were all cold and wet and exhausted, so it would have been nice to get back to our Airbnb for hot showers earlier, but c’est la vie!

Burano Island lace

Murano Island is known for its glass, and Burano Island is known for its handmade lace. It’s one of the last places in the world that still has people who make lace by hand! We went to Burano Island on a holiday so the lace museum and school were closed, but there were quite a few shops open where we could see people making lace. I also got a few souvenirs, and I was surprised that they weren’t crazy expensive (and I checked with all the shopkeepers that everything I bought was handmade on the island).

I would definitely suggest bringing waterproof shoes or sandals if you visit Venice!

Burano Island

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you may be surprised how few pictures I took of such a beautiful place. Don’t worry, I have tons more photos of Burano Island! My external hard drive decided to die before I had uploaded all of them to this post (even though the hard drive was brand new and had no damage, go figure), so fingers crossed that the computer repair store can recover all my photos and I’ll get the rest posted next week! (If you have any external hard drive recommendations, let me know!) So stay tuned for more photos! 🙂 If you’ve been to Burano Island before, did you love it as much as I did? Comment below!

Burano looks so lovely and colourful! I’m going to Venice and Verona in August and I can’t wait – I’m definitely going to try and squeeze in a visit to Burano as well! x

Wow, I didn’t know Burano was a lace-making place – that really makes me want to go there now! Lace is my absolute favourite and I admire the work that goes into handmade lace. It’s beautiful, and I didn’t think we could find things like that anymore these days. Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos, the island looks gorgeous and the grey skies surely don’t spoil it!
