3 Beautiful Parks in Hamburg to Spend a Relaxing Afternoon

I love visiting parks when I travel! I’m pretty obsessed with parks in Copenhagen, and I hang out at a park near me in Philadelphia whenever the weather is nice. So when I visited Hamburg in the summer, I made sure I visited some green spaces to see flowers in bloom. If you’re there in the spring or summer, these are 3 beautiful parks in Hamburg you can’t miss! 🙂 

Beautiful Parks in Hamburg

Stadtpark

I stayed in the Barmbek-Süd quarter, and it was about a mile walk to Stadtpark. I needed to stretch my legs after my train ride, so I had a nice leisurely stroll at sunset after a nice dinner. The park was beautiful at sunset, and it looked like a nice place to hang out during the day!

Stadtpark is pretty expansive at over 360 acres, and it used to be hunting grounds back in the day. There’s also a former water tower that was turned into a planetarium, and it’s actually Germany’s largest planetarium. There are are some stadiums and beer gardens, so there’s lots to do in the park!

The park also has an open air swimming pool, and there were actually quite a few people with remote control boats on the water in the evening. If you prefer kayaking or canoeing, you can rent some during the day. There was also a slide in the pool that I wanted to try out!

Planten un Blomen

Planten un Blomen is such a pretty park in Hamburg! It has the largest Japanese garden in Europe, and there’s a beautiful botanical garden and tropical greenhouse. It was actually a zoological garden before it was turned into a public park less than a century ago. In the summer, there are water-light performances and lots of different workshops in the Japanese garden. 

Planten un Blomen was surprisingly pretty empty when I was there, but it could be that the park is so big that people were pretty spread out. I loved strolling around the park and seeing all the different flowers, and the greenhouse was pretty cool to walk through. It’s free, and it was also pretty empty. Though it was a hot summer day so that might explain why there weren’t many people in the hot greenhouse.

Binnenalster

Binnenalster is a lake right in downtown Hamburg! It is one of two artificial lakes in the area, and they were created as a water reservoir from the Alster River. Binnenalster literally translates to “Inner Alster,” and the larger lake is “Outer Alster.” In the summer, you can take boats out on the lake, and in the winter, it can be an ice skating rink if it’s cold enough!

I spent some time hanging out on a bench by the lake, and it was so beautiful and relaxing! And I also got some ice cream, which I highly recommend on a hot summer day 🙂 

I love seeing as many sights as I can when I travel, but I also enjoy relaxing in parks and seeing a different side of the city. If you enjoy spending time in green spaces when you travel there are lots of parks in Hamburg if you want more options, but these three came highly recommended to me and they lived up to the hype! 🙂
