Besser, Samsø: A Quaint Town with a Beautiful Countryside & Beach

If you’ve been following my journey studying in Aarhus, Denmark, we’re coming to the end! I took a lot of amazing day trips from Aarhus over the summer, and I knew I wanted to visit the island of Samsø but it was too complicated and far away to make it a day trip. So I used it to break up my trip from Aarhus to Copenhagen for my flight home and spent two days exploring Samsø. I stayed in a small town called Besser and it was such a pretty place! It was a great place to relax after my class ended, and I took nice long strolls along the countryside and to the beach. And if you’re looking for a place to stay, Besser had the most amazing bed and breakfast in Samsø 🙂

Getting to Samsø

In case you haven’t heard of it, Samsø is an island right in between Aarhus and Copenhagen. I took two buses from Aarhus to the port, a ferry to Samsø, and then a bus to Besser. Because there were so many transfers in a short amount of time, I was a little worried about being late and missing one, but everything went smoothly and I didn’t miss anything!

Bed and breakfast in Samsø

I stayed in the CUTEST bed and breakfast in Samsø! I found it on Airbnb, and it was recently renovated and very affordable. The hosts were very nice and let me check in early since I had an early ferry, and in the morning, they put out a huge spread of food just for me to have for breakfast and so I could pack some for lunch. I was the only person staying there that night, but they do have a few rooms if you’re traveling with several people.

Tour of Besser

Besser is pretty small, and you can cover the whole town in half an hour. The houses are so pretty and I loved seeing all the different colors! There are also a few shops, cafes, and art galleries that you can visit. There aren’t any restaurants or grocery stores, but I did get a snack and coffee at a cafe (and my Airbnb did give me plenty of food!).

Walk through the countryside to Besser Rev

Besser, Samsø is known for Besser Rev, a long, skinny sandbar along a lagoon that you can walk on! I walked to Besser Rev from the town, and it was a bit of a walk but I loved getting to see the countryside along the way. There are lots of farms in the area, and it was so pretty in the summer! There aren’t any sidewalks along the road, so if you do walk it, make sure you look out for cars and tractors.

I didn’t have time to walk along the entire Besser Rev (it goes on further than I could see!), but even the views from the start of the sandbar were beautiful! Even though it had been hot and sunny the entire time I was in Denmark that summer, the two days I spent in Samsø were so chilly and rainy! So I didn’t try to go swimming when I was at the beach, but I’m sure it would be a nice beach in Samsø to take a dip on a warmer day.

I have to go there! Especially since I saw the photo with the Morgan garage – that’s my name! 🙂

  2. Oh – I really want to go to Samsø – it’s been on my Danish wishlist for awhile. They are super sustainably oriented and it just looks so idyllic. Besser looks the perfect base for a long weekend away on the Danish seaside. Cheers from Copenhagen!

It is always amazing to read lesser known and quite places. The sleepy beachside town is definitely an amazing place for getaway. Have never been to Denmark but this is on my list. Loved the pictures.

  5. These pictures are beautiful! I’ve always wanted to visit Denmark. Your bed and breakfast in Samso looks so cozy. Definitely adding this to the list of places to visit. Thanks for sharing.
