The Best Boat Tour of Capri

You can view all posts from my trip to Italy here.Ā

I’ve said before that one of my favorite things I did in Italy was take tours of different cities, like our rowing tour in Venice and our driving tour of Tuscany, and the boat tour of Capri was probably my favorite! We got to see some amazing sights (including the famous Blue Grotto), and we even got to swim in the Green Grotto, which may be my favorite memory from our entire Italy trip! If you’re going to the Amalfi Coast, I highly recommend doing a boat tour of Capri with Capri Relax Boats because you will not be disappointed šŸ™‚

The Best Boat Tour of Capri

We caught a ferry from Positano to Capri (you can read all about the ferries on my Ultimate Guide to Transportation on the Amalfi Coast) and had a beautiful ride out to the island. It was pretty neat to see locals out fishing and sailing! And I could not get enough of the beautiful colors of the water.

Capri Relax Boats

Once we got to Capri, it was pretty easy to find Capri Relax Boats, and since we arrived at Capri early just to be on the safe side, they actually went ahead and started the tour early for us! Our tour guide was Constantine, and he was very friendly and answered all our questions throughout the tour. He also had towels and drinks and even ponchos for us on the boat, which was really nice!Ā Even in May, the weather was warm but not hot (in the low 70s) and it was cloudy and even rainy for part of our boat tour, so you might want to bring layers to stay warm on a moving boat.

Capri is famous for the Blue Grotto, and we requested to see it on our tour. Since the grotto is very small, you have to take a small row boat and duck to get inside, and the cost to get inside is not included in the boat tour with Capri Relax Boats since it’s run by a separate organization. You have to pay 13 euros in cash per person, and the rowers also expect a tip afterwards (especially since they’re all serenading the tourists inside the grotto). Our rower even tried to get more of a tip, but we only brought enough cash into the row boat to cover our fee and the tip we had decided on. That part was annoying, especially since you only get to be in the Blue Grotto for a couple of minutes, but seeing the Blue Grotto was worth it!

We were visiting fairly early in the morning during shoulder season, and there were already boats lined up with people waiting to go inside the Blue Grotto. We didn’t have to wait too long, but be prepared to wait if you go later in the day during the middle of the summer. You can only fit a few people in the rowboats so if you’re in a big group, you’ll probably have to be split up and go in shifts.

You HAVE to duck to get inside the Blue Grotto, the opening is tiny and the waves are rocking the boat up and down constantly!

Isn’t the water incredible? It looked like it was glowing!

After getting back in our boat, we set off to see more of Capri. I was surprised that we only passed a handful of other tour boats around the island; it seemed like most people only wanted to see the Blue Grotto and nothing else, but they were missing out on a ton of beautiful sights!

Green Grotto

Green Grotto

The Green Grotto is another pretty well-known grotto on Capri, but it wasn’t nearly as crowded. And the best part was that you can swim in it! Morgan and I were the only brave ones to jump in because the water was FREEZING, but it was so worth it! And we provided some entertainment for other tourists on nearby boats- they counted down for us to jump in and laughed when we surfaced and yelled about how cold we were.

The boat was too big to go inside the grotto and I didn’t have a waterproof camera with me (adding that to my Christmas list!), but the inside of the grotto was a beautiful, glowing emerald green. It was so transparent and you could see straight down to the ocean floor. Swimming in the Green Grotto was definitely one of my favorite experiences in Italy, and I highly recommend it if you go to Capri! The water is freezing cold, but you get used to it after a few minutes.

After swimming around for a bit, Morgan and I got back in the boat and wrapped ourselves in tons of towels to warm up, and we set off to tour the rest of Capri!

We made it all the way around the island and came back to the starting point in time for a late lunch. Doing the boat tour of Capri was my favorite part of the day, and I can’t recommend doing it enough! I think doing a boat tour of Capri is the best way to see the island because we got to go inside all these little sea caves and see colorful houses, and we got to swim in the Green Grotto, of course šŸ™‚Ā

Your pictures are STUNNING! I’m sure the mediterannean blues and the caves help too šŸ™‚

  2. I love seeing historic and colorful places from the water – especially with a great guide and good weather. Funny about having to wait to get into the Blue Grotto. Thanks for keeping it real.

  3. This looks like such an amazing adventure! I am adding this to my bucket list!

  4. We haven’t been to this part of Italy yet, so we’ll have to do this when we go! I’m not a fan of jumping into cold water, but if swimming is the only way to get in that grotto, I’d definitely do it! So beautiful!

  5. Iā€™m off to Capri next year so will definitely be putting your boat trip on my list! Thanks so much for sharing and love the photos by the way!

  6. I loved my boat tour around Capri too! I got seasick on the way there from Positano which put a damper on my day. But the water and coastline were magical. I wish Iā€™d gotten to take a small boat into the blue grotto. You took absolutely beautiful photos!

Thank you for the awesome tips! I’d love to take a tour of here when I go to Capri someday…hopefully in the Spring! Was the town expensive? Thanks for all the lovely pics!

  11. Julia says:

I had never heard about the Green Grotto before! It seems like the Blue Grotto is so famous that it leaves little space for anything else, but it’s great to discover places that are not as well-known, they often prove to be even better!
Your guide seemed really helpful and this sounds like a great experience. Definitely something I’d like to do when I visit Capri one day!
