Visiting Eastern State Penitentiary

You can view the first postΒ from my visit to Eastern State Penitentiary here

Like I said in last week’s post about Eastern State Penitentiary, it’s one of the creepiest places in Philadelphia but also an excellent place to take photos. The variety in texture and color can’t be beat! I went over some of the history on last week’s post, but for a bit of history, it opened in 1829 as a revolutionary prison focused on penitence with solitude, and it’s most famous for where Al Capone was imprisoned (I have a photo of his cell below!).

To visit Eastern State Penitentiary, an adult ticket is $14, and it’s open every day except holidays. Steve Buscemi voices the audio tour (it’s pretty awesome!), and if you want a scarier tour, they have Terror Behind the Walls around Halloween. I haven’t done that tour yet, so I’m going to try to do it next year!

Could you imagine trying to climb that wall to escape?

Al Capone’s cell! As you can see, it’s much fancier than the other cells

Have I convinced anyone to visit Eastern State Penitentiary yet? πŸ™‚ It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in Philadelphia!

  1. Oooo most people think this is weird of me but I actually love and am so fascinated by visiting different prisons around the world. This one looks really interesting as well, I can’t believe what Al Capone’s cell looks like!

Your photographs are so amazing Julia ! This looks like a fantastic place to explore . That dentist chair reminds me of a scene in a horror movie . And I could not imagine climbing that wall to escape !

  3. Oh wow, this place looks so beautiful! I love visiting old and abandoned places, places with so much history, I find it fascinating; especially 19th century history! ^^ xx

It’s so crazy that I am from NYC and have never been to Philly. Love the prison photos. They creep me out, in a good way, like when I visited the catacombs in Paris. Had no idea it openned in 1829. Very cool

  5. Khoi says:

    Al Capone’s cell though…

  6. Camille says:

Your photos are incredible Julia, you’ve captured this place so well!

  7. Ro says:

These pictures look amazing! I’m definitely not brave enough to go venture here at night or at all because I watched an episode of Ghost Hunters once with this place on it, haha. I’m too much of a scaredy cat, but awesome job capturing this place! Beautiful pictures!

  8. I could probably visit during the light of day, but never at night! I have some friends who have visited around (or during?) Halloween and they’ve tried to persuade me to go but it’s too much for me! Al Capone’s cell is pretty cool -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s
