Eppendorf, Hamburg: A Gorgeous Historic Neighborhood You Can’t Miss!

One of my favorite things to do when I travel is to go off-the-beaten-path. I love seeing the main sights in cities, but I also like to get a glimpse of local life. I’ve written about a quaint neighborhood in Copenhagen, and I thought Hamburg had some really pretty neighborhoods, too! I can’t remember who recommended Eppendorf, Hamburg to me (I plan many of my travels on recommendations!), but it’s one of the most beautiful city neighborhoods I’ve visited in Europe and I’m so happy I got that suggestion! I spent an afternoon walking around Eppendorf, and I absolutely loved the colorful Victorian and art nouveau style houses everywhere 🙂

Eppendorf, Hamburg: A Gorgeous Historic Neighborhood You Can't Miss!

Tour of Eppendorf, Hamburg

Eppendorf is pretty easy to get to, and there is a train stop just a short walk from the main part of the district and there are some buses you can catch, too. The area is actually an old village, and it dates back to 1140. It remained its own village until it was incorporated into Hamburg in 1894. Eppendorf gained popularity with the aristocrats of the area in the 19th century, and they really built up the area. Today, the beautiful Victorian mansions are still in great shape, and I loved all the different colors and designs in the neighborhood!

Things to do in Eppendorf

Along with these beautiful houses, Eppendorf, Hamburg is an up and coming neighborhood and has lots of  boutiques and pop up shops. There are also many green spaces, and there are some canals and rivers around the district. I walked through Kellinghusenpark and Seelemannpark (photos at the end) when I got off at the train station, and you can also get to Stadtpark if you want to walk a little further. I didn’t have time to explore the entire neighborhood (and it started raining), so if you want to see it all, I definitely recommend spending a few hours there! If you’re in Eppendorf on Thursday or Friday, you can also visit their famous open air market.
