Long Eddy, NY: The Perfect Weekend Escape from Philadelphia and New York City

Dec

I love living in Philadelphia, but sometimes the noisy city life can be a bit much. I hadn’t taken Annika on a trip to a new place in over a year, so I decided to take a weekend vacation in pretty much the middle of nowhere. I’ve been wanting to visit the Poconos but couldn’t find a good place to stay that allowed dogs, so I happened to find an awesome Airbnb in Long Eddy, NY!

Long Eddy, NY: The Perfect Weekend Escape from Philadelphia and New York City

Last fall I visited Intercourse and Lancaster and really enjoyed them, but I wanted to explore a new place that I could take Annika. I had never heard of Long Eddy, NY, but it’s only 3 hours from Philadelphia and 2.5 hours from New York City, so it’s a great place to escape either city. It’s really in the middle of nowhere- I had no cell service and the bridge to cross over the state line only fit one car. It was  the perfect spot to disconnect and have a weekend away from noisy city life and concrete sidewalks! It was a little past prime fall foliage season, but there were still some trees with pretty orange and red colored leaves. I definitely want to go back earlier next year to see more of the fall colors!

The Airbnb we stayed in was the cutest cabin, and I loved the mix of rustic and modern styles! It also had a fenced in dog run, which Annika really enjoyed! The Airbnb did have pretty good wifi, so you can still let your family know that you’re alive (there isn’t a TV or microwave though).

After settling in, Annika and I went off to explore the area. You have to drive to most of the sights and parks, but there is a little creek and area to walk around across the street from the Airbnb and behind it. As a photographer who has only been shooting in the city lately, I really enjoyed getting lots of close up shots of all the different leaves and lichen!

Later we went to Soaring Eagle Campground to walk around the river. It’s technically in Pennsylvania, but Long Eddy is just over the border so the campground is only a few minutes away. It was too cold to go swimming or anything (although Annika thought differently), but the campground had lots of canoes and kayaks so it looks like a fun spot to visit in the warmer months!

Annika jumped right in and wanted to go swimming in the freezing cold water! And yes, she’s trying to eat the water, not drink it

It was supposed to rain the next day, so I made sure we did our hiking in the morning. We went to Crystal Lake Wild Forest, and the lake was so pretty! You do have to take some dirt and gravel roads to get there and cell service is spotty, so make sure you memorize the directions and plan ahead for going there.

All the walking and playing in the water made Annika exhausted!

If you’re looking for a weekend to escape city life, I highly recommend Long Eddy, NY, and especially staying at that Airbnb! Annika loved being able to walk around on dirt paths instead of concrete sidewalks and being able to wade in the river. Long Eddy was the perfect place to walk around in nature and have a relaxing (and quiet) weekend! 🙂

I love getaways to similar places. We’ve done it a few times since we moved to Sweden, just find a nice cabin in the middle of nowhere and enjoy the woods!
All the photos featured in the post are really pretty, I like the cold tone of them, but the last one got me glued to the monitor in cuteness overload 😀 That sleeping puppy is everything, so cosy and relaxed after the adventure!! <3

This is such a beautiful, quiet spot! The perfect weekend retreat as you said. I’ve never been anywhere that seems so far from the hustle of cities and civilisation (I might be exaggerating here but you get the idea haha) but it must be so peaceful. Annika seems to have loved it – that last photo is adorable!
