Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Philadelphia’s art scene is pretty incredible, and it’s one of my favorite things about living here. From the famous Philadelphia Museum of Art to the street murals to the music festivals, there’s something for everyone here. One of the most interesting places to see art is Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, which is covered in mosaics (even on the ground!) and spans for half a block. The artist, Isaiah Zagar, started beautifying vacant lots with mosaics in the 1960s, and Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens opened to the public in 2008. Even though “gardens” is in the name, there actually aren’t any plants!

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens reminded me a lot of some of the buildings in Christiania in Copenhagen if anyone has been there before! It is pretty popular in the spring and summer on nice days since it’s outside, so be sure to go early so you can get in. These pictures don’t do it justice, so you should definitely go see it for yourself! It’s pretty incredible to see that one person covered every inch of the space with tiles and other glass that he collected.

  7. Ro says:

I love these photographs and I love Magic Gardens! I’ve been twice and love it each time! It’s so beautiful and so amazing knowing that it also includes pieces that are recycled items/items that would otherwise be disposed of and thrown in the trash.

  8. I visited the Magic Gardens during the fall break of my sophomore year of college! (I’m now a junior). I went with a group of friends, but I have another group of friends who have never been and really want me to go with them (for photos LOL). I mean, I have nothing against visiting the Magic Gardens again, and if they insist, who am I to argue? 😉 I actually also shared a post on my blog about my trip to the Magic Gardens if you want to check it out HERE! -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

These photos are so beautiful! Truthfully I don’t know much about Philly, but I’ve always wanted to visit for the art. Especially the Magic Gardens!

  13. Alana says:

We have small scale mosaic installations in downtown Binghamton, New York (where I work) – nothing at all like this. I’ve also been to the Bottle Houses of Prince Edward Island. But this is something different. And I only live three hours away!

  14. Stephanie says:

Wow! What a gorgeous place. I love these photos. All the colors are so pretty.
