You can view the first installmentsΒ of my trip to Mexico on my San Luis PotosΓ, Mexico Part 1Β and Part 2 posts

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know how much I LOVEΒ history. I love learning about random pieces of history (hence my obsession with Vikings), and whenever I’m traveling somewhere, my favorite part of a trip is seeing all the old buildings. So it came as no surprise that I fell in love with the section of Old City San Luis PotosΓ, Mexico!

For a little background on Old CityΒ San Luis PotosΓ, Mexico, many of the buildings were built in the neoclassical and baroque styles and they are BEAUTIFUL. Franciscan priests from Spain arrived in 1539 and established Roman Catholic churchesΒ in the area, and let me tell you, I have never seen so many cathedrals and churches in such a concentratedΒ area in my life. Many are even right across the street from each other. The city of San Luis PotosΓ was established in 1592, and it was a mining community. It was originally called Valle de San Luis, andΒ PotosΓ means fortune and was added to the name when gold and silver mines opened.Β

Like I’ve said before,Β San Luis PotosΓ, Mexico is not a touristy place at all, and it’s a great place to get an authentic taste of Mexico. Plus, just seeΒ how beautiful it is!

  5. Sarah says:

Being a religious catholic, I do a mini pilgrimage in places like this where there are numerous churches around. Beautiful architecture! πŸ™‚

  6. FΓ‘bio says:

How I love places like this, with less tourism but full of history.
Because of you I want to go to San Luis Potosi πŸ˜‰

  7. I share your love for history. I think is so important for the traveller to know at least a little bit about what happened in the place we visit. That gives a bigger picture and enhances the experience.

  8. Kallsy says:

In a lot of ways it reminds me of Mission San Juan Capistrano in Dana Point, CA. I was just there last weekend! However the design here is obviously more intricate.

  9. Old City San Luis Potosi is indeed beautiful! We haven’t been to Mexico yet, but it’s on our list! Just like many other places. πŸ˜‰ Some family recently went though, and they were really impressed, saying we should go too. We will, someday. πŸ™‚

  10. Staci says:

I love your detail photos of the cathedral – they could be fine art prints, so pretty!!

  11. Travelgal Nicole says:

There is so much history there and such beautiful architecture. Beautiful photos!

  12. How beautiful!! I love that this isn’t a tourist spot either. I visited a small (SMALL) town in Baja California a little over a year ago and love wandering the small town and the old church without any other tourists!

  13. beautiful images! felt like i was there πŸ™‚

  14. Anjali says:

Love these photos – you did an awesome job making me feel like I’m there! *And that I SHOULD be there!!!

  15. I too, enjoy nerding out a little bit during my travels. It’s usually never a problem because most of the time I am solo. I miss Mexico and enjoyed Mexico City more than Cancun just because of its richness.

  16. This place reminds me so much of Old SAn Juan, Puerto Rico! I am a fool for old doors and pops of colors at every corner! Cheers!

  17. Emma says:

Wow, that cathedral is stunning and the dome is absolutely beautiful inside. So much beautiful architecture in one place. Mexico does have a lot of history and there’s so much to see – looking forward to Mexico part 2!

  18. Chrystina says:

Look at all of those pops of color!! I love it. So much cooler architecture than here.

  19. Kristen says:

  21. Daisy says:

Love your photos! There is just something about architecture down south. The colors are always so vibrant and ambiance cheerful!

  22. Envious of people who have a knack for history because I cannot bring myself to like it whatsoever. Even though I might not love history, these places look stunning! The architectural detail is definitely something to write home to!

  23. Jacky says:

Aah! I love history and architecture too πŸ˜€
Beautiful pictures! I really love the combination of the traditional European architecture and the Latin choice of colour! ❀

  24. Wow! My parents are from mexico so yes there are many beautiful churches

  25. Jaina says:

Amazing photos! and stunning architecture, paintings and interiors! Like you mentioned, the place doesn’t look touristy at all! Part of me was thinking, wow this place needs more promotion and the other part of me was like hidden gems like this might lose its warmth if its too crowded.

  26. I live in Mexico and I’ve been dying to go to San Luis for aaaages. Thanks for inspiring me πŸ™‚

  27. Kuleigh says:
