One Day in Capri

You can view all posts from my trip to Italy here.

Last week’s post was about the incredible boat ride I took around Capri (including getting to swim in one of the grottos!), and I highly recommend doing it if you visit Capri! It was one of my favorite experiences in Italy (and definitely my favorite on the Amalfi Coast), and we got to see so many amazing sights around the island. With only one day in Capri, the boat ride did take a chunk out of our day (but it was so worth it), and then we had a few hours left to explore the island.

One Day in Capri

After our boat tour, we were starving, so our first mission was to find a restaurant. It was a little past lunchtime so not many places were still open for lunch, but thankfully Lo Zodiaco was. Since we were on an island, we got some seafood and it was all delicious! Morgan was the most adventurous out of us all and while not all of us liked her food, she enjoyed it.

We were seriously starving!

After licking our plates clean, we went off exploring. Capri is a surprisingly large island and it’s actually made up of two towns: Capri and Anacapri. Since we didn’t have a ton of time and wanted to have a more relaxing day, we just explored the town of Capri. You can walk around some near the marina, but the main part of the town is up a hill, and we took the funicular to get there. It’s 2 euros each way and only takes a couple of minutes.

Do you see the size of those lemons??

I was sad that it was cloudy for part of the day, but the clouds made some cool formations!

On the funicular, you get to see lots of little homes and lemon trees!

The top of the hill had some pretty great views of the water! There are lots of shops and gelaterias to browse, and the town is really cute and colorful, so I took tons of photos (of course). The spot where you get off of the funicular was fairly crowded, but once we got further into the town, it got a lot emptier. We thought about doing the famous chair lift in Anacapri, but the line to get on the bus to get to the chair lift was long and we were a bit short on time, so Stephanie and I just walked leisurely around the town taking photos and eating gelato. I would recommend doing the chair lift if you have time because I’ve heard that it has great views, but you may have to wait in a lot of lines.

Stephanie and I wandered down to Augustus Gardens, and it was so beautiful! Everything was starting to bloom, and I couldn’t get enough of all the colorful flowers. Part of the garden and a pathway were blocked off, but we still got to see most of it. There’s also a great viewpoint overlooking the water and the faraglioni, the famous large rock formations off the coast of Capri.

After taking tons of photos of the gardens and the water, we started heading back towards the funicular. We could have stayed on Capri longer, but the cheapest ferry back to Positano was in the early evening and the ferries got more expensive later in the day. I would have liked to see more of Capri, but having a relaxing walk around the town instead of rushing through it was really nice!

While we were waiting for the funicular, a marching band came through!

The funicular was a bit late for some reason, so we were cutting it close on catching our ferry. When we got to the marina, we saw our ferry company and they were actually removing the walkway to the boat! We started screaming at them to wait and sprinted over (and some nice Italians closer to the boat yelled at them to wait, too!), but it turned out they were just adjusting the walkway since the boat was moving around in the choppy water! So we made it on time, and I’m sure we provided some great entertainment for the locals. Four screaming and sprinting Americans must have been quite the sight!

Capri was probably my favorite spot on the Amalfi Coast, and I highly recommend visiting, even if you only have one day in Capri! I loved how colorful everything was- everything from the water to the architecture. If you’ve been to Capri before, what was your favorite thing about it? 🙂

Ahhhhh, Capri. I only had a day there too, but it was GLORIOUS. The best thing that happened that day was that our rowboat guy at the Blue Grotto broke all the rules and let us jump out and swim inside. I will never, ever forget that experience.
