Tour of Østerbro: Fælledparken, Modern Danish Architecture, & a Colorful Street in Copenhagen

When Matt and I were studying abroad in Copenhagen, I lived a little outside the city but he stayed with a host family near the center of the city in a neighborhood called Østerbro. When we went back to Copenhagen, we stayed with his host family again and got to explore more of Østerbro! Like Vesterbro, it’s usually an overlooked neighborhood when tourists go to Copenhagen, but it’s definitely worth exploring if you want to experience more local life and see some fascinating modern and historic architecture 🙂

Østerbrogade

I think Østerbro is a great place to stay when you visit Copenhagen because it’s pretty quiet while also being near the center of the city. It’s only 1-2 stops from Nørreport Station by S-train. Plus, it’s a really pretty neighborhood!

Østerbrogade is the most well known street in Østerbro, and it has lots of shops and restaurants along it. It used to extend to the Eastern City Gate situated north of the city (I know, a little confusing), but the gate was torn down in the 19th century and Østerbrogade was extended to what it is now. The area actually used to be covered in potato fields until the gate was torn down, but you would never guess it now. Afterwards, Østerbro started as a neighborhood for the bourgeoisie, so there are lots of mansions and beautiful historic buildings in the area!

Emmerys is my favorite chain cafes in Copenhagen, so you should stop in for tebirkes and hindbærsnitter!

Olufsvej

Matt and I just happened to find Olufsvej when we were walking around, and it’s one of the prettiest streets in Copenhagen! The houses are so brightly colored, and it reminded me of Møllestien in Aarhus.

The street is named after Oluf Bang Winge, a merchant who owned a large area in Østerbro. The houses were built in 1874-1877 as workers’ homes, and they’re still in great condition today.

Fælledparken

Created in 1906, Fælledparken is probably the most famous spot in Østerbro. It’s the largest park in Copenhagen, and they have a stadium and playgrounds and room for the 1 May celebrations and other events! I went to Fælledparken for an F.C. Copenhagen match and the 1 May speeches, and the last time there Matt and I went for an evening stroll at sunset with his host mom’s dog.

Modern Danish architecture in Østerbro

Right near the Nordhavn Station is a pretty new development on the water. You can see some pretty cool modern Danish architecture and even go for a swim on one of their man-made beaches! Matt and I walked around at sunset again, and sunset on the water was very pretty and relaxing.

What a great day it looks like! I love the colorful houses, I think the orange one is my favorite though, I don’t know why it just stands out.

  4. Østerbro has been our home for almost 5 years. We love it. Laid back, but enough going on – especially when there is a concert or FCK game going on at Telia Parken. Some excellent cafés and lovely places to get a beer down by the lakes too. Nordhavn is actually it’s own neighborhood now – it’s just Østerbro adjacent – even has it’s own zip code! Great place to take a dip in the clear harbor right from the pier there. Beautiful photos!

Whenever I read about copenhagen, I feel kind of ashamed. It would take to be about 6 hours to get there by rain from STockholm Sweden, but I have never been there.

    The Victorian architecture looks amazing!

I really should look into going there, maybe during the fall 🙂
