Tour of Positano

If you read last week’s post on getting around the Amalfi Coast, you’ll know that we had a HORRIBLE time getting there, but the beautiful views made it worth it! The water is absolutely gorgeous, and it’s pretty amazing to see all these pretty towns built into the cliff sides.

Tour of Positano

We had a little over two days to spend on the Amalfi Coast, but I would have liked to spend more because there were a few places we didn’t get to see. We stayed in Praiano because it was pretty central, and we took a day to see Positano and catch a ferry to Capri, and the next day we went to Amalfi. If we had more time there, we would have visited Ravello (which some of the locals also recommended) and Sorrento.

Because all the towns are built on the cliffs, there were stairs EVERYWHERE! I was mentally prepared for this because I had read a lot about the Amalfi Coast, but I wasn’t physically prepared! We got to our hotel,Β Hotel Villa Bellavista,Β after dark and after our terrible journey, and we had to hike down tons of stairs with all our luggage (which was loaded up with souvenir bottles of wine and grappa at this point in our trip). And once we got to the bottom to check in, we were told that our room was at the top where we had started from. At this point, we were so exhausted and grumpy, and we were struggling to make it to our rooms. Once we got there, we basically collapsed! So if you’re staying at theΒ Hotel Villa Bellavista, just send one person down to the hotel to find out where your room is before you take all your luggage down.

It was a very cute and clean place, and the view from our balcony was so nice! (I’ll have pictures in my next post!) After dropping our stuff off, we went across the street for pizza atΒ Che Bonta, and it was pretty good and the waiter was very friendly and helpful (I was too tired and hungry to take a photo of the pizza, sorry!).

After some hot showers and lots of sleep, we headed out the next morning to for a tour of Positano before getting on the boat to Capri.Β I had first heard about Positano fromΒ Barefoot Blonde’s posts about vacationing there and it looked like such a beautiful place! It’s one of the more expensive places on the Amalfi Coast (that’s one of the reasons we didn’t stay there), but it’s such a cute place to explore! There are lots of little restaurants and boutiques to browse, and there’s something to photograph at every turn. I couldn’t get enough of all the colorful buildings and that gorgeous water! Positano has a pretty nice beach, which not all of the towns do. Near our hotel in Praiano, they built a concrete “beach” on the water.

We got to Positano pretty early and slowly made our way down towards the beach, and after we came back from Capri that afternoon, we toured some more of the town and stopped by a restaurant. We were in Positano for only a few hours, and I would say that it’s enough time if you just want to see the sights because it doesn’t take long to walk through the town. If you want to do some shopping or spend time at the beach, half a day should be enough.

Positano lemons

The Amalfi Coast is famous for their lemons, and I took some photos of the biggest lemons I’ve ever seen in some of the other towns we visited! They also have delicious tomatoes, so make sure you get some bruschetta while you’re there!

The bar we wanted to go to wasn’t open, so we stopped byΒ Hotel L’Ancora for some drinks and snacks and they were great!

We made sure we saved enough time to go to the bus stop, but the bus didn’t come for an hour! We asked a taxi driver how much it would be to drive a couple of miles to Praiano, and he gave us a really expensive price, so we waited out the bus with all these other people. The buses were decent overall, but occasions like that made it annoying.

We didn’t get to spend much time in there, but I really enjoyed what we got to see on our little tour of Positano. If you’re visiting the Amalfi Coast, make sure you stop by Positano for some beautiful views of the coastline! It’s definitely a must see in Italy πŸ™‚

Wow, my eyes were blessed for a moment there! The coast looks beautiful and the architectures of the buildings are stunning. I love this kind of places and would definitely visit Postiano, if I get the chance!

  2. Jacki says:

Such beautiful photos!! I have been to Italy, but not Positano and I am dying to go.

  3. I had one of the best weekends of my LIFE on the island of Capri while studying abroad in 2004. I still look back at it and smile. Sadly, I haven’t returned to the Amalfi Coast since!! You’ve made a brilliant case for Positano in particular. Such a majestic place to photograph.

  5. Eva says:

I should be ashamed to say that I’m Italian and I have never been there!! Would really love to, but there is so much about my home country I haven’t had the chance to explore – it takes a lifetime to see all of it!
Beautiful pictures, and I hope that despite the bad luck getting there and the continued bad luck with the luggage-and-stairs issue you had a blast because it really looks fabulous!

    • Julia says:

Nice photos. I never managed to get to this part of Italy. But your post makes me regret that decision! I hope to explore more of that country and follow your recommendations on this post…it really looks enticing the way you talked about the place!

  11. Phoebe says:

Wow! Love the photography – this transported me right back to the time I was in Positano. Although the day we went the weather wasn’t too good so I guess I’ll have to go back πŸ™‚

  12. Corinne says:

I love the flowers, I love the tiles, the architecture…it’s just all so charming! I could definitely see how all the hiking with luggage would be a problem though. But a small price to pay πŸ˜‰

  13. Julia says:

Positano looks stunning! It’s one of the Italian places that’s on my travel bucket list, with Capri as well. It seems incredibly expensive because of all the fame it has, but it’s so beautiful – the shades in the water are indeed incredible, not to mention the beautiful, colourful houses!
Having to climb up and down all these stairs must have been a struggle with the exhaustion of your trip, but it’s also such a fun particularity that it’s great to experience it in a way!

As long as you don’t stay in the most expensive places, it’s pretty affordable to visit! The buses are cheap and they’re easy to use to get around the whole coast. You should definitely visit if you get the chance! πŸ™‚
