Matt and I are getting married! You’ve probably seen me talk about it on social media because I’m a little excited, and I thought I would share our love story after we took our engagement photos. We did our engagement photoshoot in Old City Philadelphia with Kristen of Petal and Glass Photography and I love how they turned out! πŸ™‚

Engagement Photoshoot in Old City Philadelphia + Our Danish Love Story

Engagement photoshoot in Old City Philadelphia

Matt and I live in Philadelphia now (I’ll explain how we ended up here), so we wanted to do our photos in some iconic Philly places. Kristen suggested by Independence Hall and the historicΒ Second Bank of the United States, which are some beautiful spots in Philly. And thankfully they weren’t as crowded as other spots in Old City!

It was 30 degrees when we took these photos, and Kristen was a trooper. If you’re looking for a wedding photographer in Philadelphia or New Jersey, I can’t recommend her enough πŸ™‚ You can check out her blog to see more photos from our engagement photoshoot!

Our Danish love story

So how Matt and I met is a little unique! We met studying abroad in Copenhagen πŸ™‚ I was 19 years old and befriended a guy in my orientation group who turned out to be in my Nordic Mythology class (and who will be a groomsman in our wedding!). After our class, he introduced me to Matt and invited me to watch a handball match with them later that night.

We watch Denmark beat Croatia in a dive bar surrounded by drunk Danes, so it was pretty romantic πŸ˜‰ Matt and I did go back to the bar when we visited Copenhagen this past summer and it looked exactly the same! Sadly, when I went back a few months later, it had closed, but at least we were able to have one last drink before it closed.

So we befriended one of the drunk Danes named Martin, and we had a great time chatting and drinking Carlsbergs and Somersbys with him and his friends (to this day, Somersby is my favorite cider, and I was so excited when they started selling them in the US a few months ago!). The day after the handball match, Matt as me out on an official date, without drunk Danes!

Two days after the handball match, Matt and I went on our first official date at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, the art museum in Copenhagen. We joked around about some of the statues and admired the architecture, and we were there so long that we got kicked out at closing! Then we walked around Copenhagen holding hands as it snowed, so that date was a little more romantic than the handball match πŸ™‚

So after four months of dating in Copenhagen, we had to return to the US, Matt went home to New Jersey and I went home to North Carolina. Being broke college students, we weren’t able to visit each other very often, and we did long distance for two and a half years. Matt is a year older than me, so he started med school in Philadelphia while I had one more year of college in North Carolina. After I graduated, I found a job in Philadelphia and moved to be close to him!

I’ve been in Philadelphia for three and a half years and now I run my own SEO consulting business and go to grad school, and Matt graduated from med school and is doing his first year of residency. And in that time, I adopted my Siberian Husky, Annika, and my move to Philadelphia is the whole reason why I started this blog!

The proposal

So this past summer, I went back to Denmark to study abroad again to take a class on Viking history. I was gone for a month, and when I returned to Philly, Matt and I were going to go out to dinner to celebrate at Noord, our favorite Scandinavian restaurant in Philly.

Before we left for dinner, he gave me a photo album that he had put together while I was gone. It was filled with letters I had sent him while we were doing long distance in college and photos from our travels and throughout our relationship, and on the last page, he wrote asking me to marry him and he got down on one knee πŸ™‚

We’re getting married in Center City Philadelphia in the summer, and I’m narrowing down where we’re going on our honeymoon!
