Niederbreitenbach, Austria: The Best Spot for a Quiet, Romantic Honeymoon in the Alps

Matt and I had our honeymoon in the Alps, and it was an amazing place for a honeymoon! We got married in August and I didn’t want to melt in the heat on a beach, so we looked for places to honeymoon near a mountain lake (if you’re also looking for an off-the-beaten-path honeymoon, I have a post on 7 adventurous honeymoons!). After searching through flights and Airbnbs, we settled on Niederbreitenbach in the Austrian Alps, and it was the perfect place for our honeymoon 🙂

We stayed in the prettiest chalet in Niederbreitenbach! There are hotels and BNBs in the area, but we wanted to have a quiet honeymoon so we booked a whole 4 bedroom chalet (and it was still cheaper than anywhere I’ve stayed in the US!).

One of the main reasons I booked this chalet was for the amazing details in the dining area! It felt like an authentic chalet in the Alps, which is exactly what we were looking for. It also had a little patio and a balcony, so we had lots of different pretty places to choose from to eat breakfast.

Tour of chalets in Niederbreitenbach

Niederbreitenbach was the perfect town to stay in for a quiet honeymoon, and it had everything we needed! It’s a small quaint town with beautiful chalets and mountains, and there was a grocery store only a 2 minute drive away from our chalet. There are some restaurants in the town, but they were closed for the summer. But nearby is Restaurant Fliegerstube, where we had one of the best (and biggest) meals on our trip, and since it was the off season, we actually had the whole restaurant to ourselves.

We loved walking around Niederbreitenbach! There are so many beautiful chalets and quaint houses, and the backdrop of the Alps was amazing. I also loved all the small details on the houses. A lot of them had paintings on the sides, and the balconies had ornate details and pretty flowers.

One stone house even looked like a small castle with vines and turrets. Even if you don’t stay in Niederbreitenbach, it’s worth visiting if you’re in the area!

Stimmersee

So I mentioned that we chose to stay in Niederbreitenbach because of the mountains and the lakes. Hintersteiner See in Wilder Kaiser was the main lake we wanted to see (and I’ll have plenty of photos posted soon), but Stimmersee was nearby, too! It’s said to be the second cleanest lake in Austria, and you can go swimming in it.

We did go swimming one afternoon, and the water was VERY cold so be prepared if you want to dip your toes in (it probably didn’t help that it rained earlier and was cloudy while we were there). But the area was beautiful and the water was very refreshing!

So if you’re looking for a nice and quiet, romantic honeymoon in the Alps, I can’t recommend Niederbreitenbach enough! The town is pretty and peaceful, and the mountains and lakes are absolutely stunning sights to see.
