I love getting to see cities from up high when I travel, and Copenhagen has some great (and surprisingly cheap) towers you can climb! Copenhagen is one of the most beautiful cities to get views of because the roofs are so colorful, and the tallest buildings downtown are historic with amazing detailed roofs and towers. Plus, you can see some of the castles from up high! So if you’re looking for the best views of Copenhagen, you can’t miss these 3 awesome towers 🙂
Best places for views of Copenhagen
Church of Our Saviour
The Church of Our Saviour is one of the most famous churches in Copenhagen. It has a spire at the top that you can climb for amazing views! The building of the church started in 1682 under Christian IV while he expanded Copenhagen, and the famous spire dates back to the 1700s. The church was built in the Dutch baroque style, and the organ was made in 1698.
Pros:
-The views are awesome! Since it’s not in the main part of town, you can get some different views of Copenhagen.
-The church itself is beautiful to tour.
-It’s pretty inexpensive.
Cons:
-This is the hardest climb of all the towers. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone claustrophobic or afraid of heights because you have to climb inside in some pretty tight spaces, and once you get to the top, the stairs are narrow and that railing was only as high as my hip.
-It’s only open during certain times of the year.
-Since the space is so narrow, you might have to wait in line before you’re allowed up.
I loved getting views of Copenhagen outside of the city center
The Round Tower
The Round Tower (or the Rundetaarn) is one of the coolest buildings in Copenhagen! It was built as an observatory in the 17th century, and it was used until the 19th century. The inside of the tower was built with a round ramp to allow horses and carriages to fit to transport books to the library. Cars have even fit in it, and every year, there’s a unicycle race up and down the tower!
Like with the Church of Our Saviour, the Round Tower has a church you can tour before you go up. We actually got kicked out after a few minutes because they had a wedding starting soon, so it was pretty cool to see them setting up for the wedding!
Pros:
-The views are great, but the inside of the tower is worth seeing, too!
-The ramp makes it an easy climb to the top.
-It’s only costs a few dollars.
-It’s pretty spacious so you probably won’t have to wait in line.
Cons:
-It’s pretty popular so it can get crowded.
-The fencing at the top can make it a little tricky to get good pictures (but it is good for people afraid of heights).
You can see Rosenborg!
Christiansborg Palace
Christiansborg Palace is one of my favorite buildings in Copenhagen! It’s gorgeous, and the tour of the palace is pretty amazing. But you can also climb the tower for views of Copenhagen, and the best part of the tower is that it’s totally FREE! The view from the top is pretty awesome, and you get an amazing view of the Copenhagen Stock Exchange building.
Pros:
-It’s FREE!
-You take an elevator to the top, so no climbing!
-The views are awesome.
-You can tour the gorgeous palace while you’re there.
Cons:
-They can only let a certain number of people up at a time, so you might have to wait in line.
-There isn’t a fence blocking the view, but you do kinda have to step up on a ledge to get some good pictures.
You can see the Marble Church and Amalienborg to the right
The Stock Exchange building
If you’re looking for the best views of Copenhagen, these are the top 3 spots! If you have time to go to all 3, I recommend it because they each offer unique views, and the tickets are all inexpensive or free so it’s possible to see them all on a budget. Plus, they’re all attached to beautiful buildings, so you can tour them while you’re there! 🙂
